Kenny Rogers – The Artist

Kenneth Ray Rogers (1936 – 2020) was an American singer, songwriter, actor, record producer, and entrepreneur. Rogers was particularly popular with country audiences but also charted more than 120 hit singles across various music genres, and topped the country and pop album charts in the UK and the US. He sold over 100 million records worldwide during his lifetime, making him one of the best-selling music artists of all time. His fame and career spanned multiple genres: jazz, folk, pop, rock, and country. He remade his career, and was one of the most successful cross-over artists of all time.

Coward of The County – The Song

“Coward of The County” is a song written by Roger Bowling and Billy Ed Wheeler, and recorded by American country music singer Kenny Rogers. The song was released in 1979 as the second single from Rogers’ multi-platinum album Kenny. It became a major crossover hit, worldwide. Lyrically the song tells the tale of a young man who has a reputation for not standing up for himself. The mans non-violent attitude was greatly influenced by his father who died in prison. The man is faced in a predicament where he can either defend his girlfriends honour or uphold his father’s plea to “walk away from trouble when he can”. He ends up in a fight fuelled by his long-bottled-up aggression and wins. Afterwards he reflects on his late father’s plea, addressing him respectfully that while he did his best to avoid trouble, he hopes his father understands that “Sometimes you gotta fight when you’re a man.”
