Monty Python – The Artist/s

Monty Python were a British surreal comedy group who created the sketch comedy television show Monty Python’s Flying Circus, which first aired on the BBC in 1969. Forty-five episodes were made over four series. The Python phenomenon developed from the television series into something larger in scope and impact, including touring stage shows, films, numerous albums, several books and musicals. The Pythons’ influence on comedy has been compared to the Beatles’ influence on music. Regarded as an enduring icon of 1970s pop culture, their sketch show has been referred to as being “an important moment in the evolution of television comedy”. Broadcast by the BBC between 1969 and 1974, Monty Python’s Flying Circus was conceived, written and performed by its members Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin. Loosely structured as a sketch show, but with an innovative stream-of-consciousness approach aided by Gilliam’s animation, it pushed the boundaries of what was acceptable in style and content.

Lumberjack Song – The Song

‘Lumberjack Song’ is a comedy song by the comedy troupe Monty Python. The song was written and composed by Terry Jones, Michael Palin, and Fred Tomlinson. It first appeared in the ninth episode of Monty Python’s Flying Circus, “The Ant: An Introduction” on BBC1 on 14 December 1969. The song has since been performed in several forms, including film, stage, and LP, each time started from a different skit. “The Lumberjack Song” was released as a single in the UK, on Charisma Records, backed with “Spam Song”. The A-side, produced by Python devotee George Harrison, was recorded at the Work House studio in London on 3 October 1975 and mixed at Harrison’s Friar Park home the following day.  The common theme is of an average man who expresses dissatisfaction with his current job and wants to be a lumberjack. He proceeds to talk about the wonderful life of a lumberjack however, as the song continues, he increasingly reveals cross-dressing tendencies.

The chainsaw  – The Shape

This record has been modelled into a chainsaw as used by woodcutters and lumberjacks. A chainsaw (alternatively spelled chain saw) is a portable, mechanical saw which cuts with a set of teeth attached to a rotating chain that runs along a guide bar. It is used in activities such as tree felling, limbing, bucking, pruning, cutting firebreaks in wild land fire suppression and harvesting of firewood.
