Motörhead – The Artist

Motörhead were an English rock band formed in June 1975 by bassist, singer, and songwriter Ian “Lemmy” Kilmister, who was the sole constant member, guitarist Larry Wallis and drummer Lucas Fox. The band are often considered a precursor to the new wave of British heavy metal, which re-energised heavy metal in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Though several guitarists and drummers have played in Motörhead, most of their best-selling albums and singles feature the work of Phil “Philthy Animal” Taylor on drums and “Fast” Eddie Clarke on guitars. Motörhead released 22 studio albums, 10 live recordings, 12 compilation albums, and five EPs over a career spanning 40 years. Usually a power trio, they had particular success in the early 1980s with several successful singles in the UK Top 40 chart. The albums Overkill, Bomber, Ace of Spades, and particularly the live album No Sleep ’til Hammersmith cemented Motörhead’s reputation as a top-tier rock band. The band have sold more than 15 million albums worldwide.

Overkill – The Song

‘Overkill’ is  a song by the British hard rock band Motörhead. It was released in 7″ and 12″ vinyl pressings in 1979. It is backed with B-side “Too Late Too Late” which appears on the CD re-issues of the Overkill album. Early copies came with a free “Overkill” badge. The single reached number 39 on the UK Singles Chart. On 9 March 1979, the band played this song on the BBC TV show Top of the Pops to support the release of the single. The song was a live favourite and was frequently featured at Motörhead concerts, often in an extended version. The track is notable for Phil “Philthy Animal” Taylor’s use of two bass drums. “Overkill” was used as the closing song for Motörhead’s final tour, making it the last song the band ever played live.

The Motörhead Snaggletooth ‘War Pig’ – The Shape

This record has been modelled into the notorious  Motörhead  Snaggletooth, also known as ‘war pig’, logo, as on the singles picture record sleeve.  The ‘Snaggletooth’ logo was created by Joe Petagno. It was designed to to get people to to stand up and take notice and want to check out the music. The band wanted a biker patch that could be displayed on the back of a denim vest. According to the creator the animal is based on a wolf and gorilla shaped head with wild boar teeth. It is a anti-everything symbol. The Snaggletooth is a symbol for standing firm, resisting, rejecting, refusing, rebelling against anything and  everything that is detrimental one’s individuality. Symbolically, it is the perfect visualisation of everything the band was founded upon and stood for. It has become a symbol that represents a brotherhood of likeminded individuals and even today Snaggletooth’s salivating grin can  be spotted on shirts, jackets, shoes, hoodies, hats, tattoos and more.
