The Supremes – The Artist

The Supremes were an American female singing group and a premier act of Motown Records during the 1960s. Founded as The Primettes in Detroit, Michigan, in 1959, the Supremes were the most commercially successful of Motown’s acts and are, to date, one of the worlds most successful vocal group with 12 hit singles. Most of these hits were written and produced by Motown’s main songwriting and production team, Holland–Dozier–Holland. At their peak in the mid-1960s, the Supremes rivalled the Beatles in worldwide popularity, and it is said that their success made it possible for future African American R&B and soul musicians to find mainstream success. The original group of Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson, Diana Ross, and Betty McGlown, are all from the Brewster-Douglass public housing project in Detroit.

Stop! In The Name Of Love – The Song

‘Stop! In The Name Of Love’ is a 1965 song recorded by the Supremes for the Motown label. Written and produced by Motown’s main production team Holland–Dozier–Holland, “Stop! In the Name of Love” was a top hit in both the UK and the US. The Supremes’ choreography for this song involved one hand on the hip and the other outstretched in a “stop” gesture. 

The Heart Stop Sign – The Shape

This record has been modelled into a loving heart within a stop sign. The heart shape and its meaning has evolved over hundreds of years. Nowadays it means love but before the 13th and 14th centuries it was generally drawn for decorative purposes. People at that time thought of our hearts as books of memory and believed feelings for the beloved were somehow written on your heart.

A stop sign is a traffic sign designed to notify drivers that they must come to a complete stop and make sure the intersection is safely clear of vehicles and pedestrians before continuing past the sign. In the UK these roadside traffic signs are circular which denotes an order, compared to a warning sign which are triangular in shape.
