Frank Sinatra With Billy May And His Orchestra – The Artist/s

Francis Albert Sinatra (1915 – 1998) was an American singer, actor and producer who was one of the most popular and influential musical artists of the 20th century. He is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, having sold more than 150 million records worldwide.  A perfectionist, renowned for his dress sense and performing presence, he always insisted on recording live with his band. His bright blue eyes earned him the popular nickname “Ol’ Blue Eyes”. Sinatra led a colourful personal life, and was often involved in turbulent affairs with women. Sinatra began his musical career in the swing era with bandleaders Harry James and Tommy Dorsey. Sinatra found success as a solo artist after he signed with Columbia Records in 1943. Sinatra left Capitol in 1960 to start his own record label, Reprise Records, and released a string of successful albums. But by the early 1950s his professional career had stalled and he turned to Las Vegas, where he became one of its best known residency performers as part of the Rat Pack. His career was reborn in 1953 with the success of his film, From Here to Eternity. Sinatra retired for the first time in 1971, but came out of retirement two years later. He recorded several albums and resumed performing at Caesars Palace, and released “New York, New York” in 1980. Using his Las Vegas shows as a home base, he toured both within the United States and internationally until shortly before his death in 1998.

Edward William May Jr. (1916 – 2004) was an American composer, arranger and trumpeter. He composed film and television music for The Green Hornet (1966), The Mod Squad (1968), Batman (with Batgirl theme, 1967), and Naked City (1960). He collaborated on films such as Pennies from Heaven (1981). May wrote arrangements for many top singers, including Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Anita O’Day, Peggy Lee, Vic Damone, Bobby Darin, Johnny Mercer, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Prima, Keely Smith, Jack Jones, Bing Crosby, Sandler and Young, Nancy Wilson, Rosemary Clooney, The Andrews Sisters and Ella Mae Morse.

Come Fly With Me – The Song

‘Come Fly With Me’ is a song taken from the Frank Sinatra EP (Extended Play Single) which were in turn from the fourteenth studio album, released in 1958. Sinatra’s first collaboration with arranger/conductor Billy May, Come Fly with Me was designed as a musical trip around the world. Sammy Cahn and Jimmy Van Heusen wrote the title track at Sinatra’s request. Though recorded simultaneously in true stereo alongside a distinct mono mix, “Come Fly with Me” was released to record stores in 1958 in monaural only, a standard practice by Capitol records at the time. The label finally released the stereo version in 1961. Come Fly With Me is still one of his most popular tracks.

Frank Sinatra – The Shape

This record has been cut into the unmistakable shape of Frank Sinatra from the fifties when he was often seen wearing a suit with a shirt and tie, topped with a trilby hat. In addition I have included a commercial jet plane inspired by the record sleeves picture cover. Please note the ‘map background’ is made from a genuine map of Italy lifted from vintage atlas therefore the actual maps may differ slightly depending on the Atlas publisher.
