James – The Artist/s

James are an English rock band from Manchester, who were formed in 1982. They enjoyed popularity throughout the 1990s, with four top 10s on the UK Singles Chart and nine top 10s on the UK Albums Chart. The band’s best-known singles include “Come Home”, “Sit Down”, “She’s a Star” and “Laid”, which also became a hit on American college radio. The initial line-up consisted of Paul Gilbertson – Lead Guitar, Jim Glennie – bass guitar – Gavan Whelan Drums and Tim Booth – Lead vocals. Following the departure of lead singer Tim Booth in 2001, the band became inactive, but reunited in January 2007 and has gone on to produce a further six albums. Live performance has continually remained a central part of the band’s output. As of 2010, the band had sold more than 25 million albums worldwide.

Come Home – The Song

‘Come Home’ is a song by English rock band James, first released as a single in November 1989 by Rough Trade. Like the preceding single, “Sit Down”, it received little attention initially and led to James parting ways with Rough Trade. After Mercury Records had signed the band to the Fontana label and experienced chart success with “How Was It for You” they re-released “Come Home” in June 1990 in a version remixed by Flood. The original release had artwork by Central Station Design while the re-release repeated the design of the “How Was It for You” singles, with the words “come” and “home” on the front and back covers, respectively, with different background colours marking the various formats. The song featured on the influential 1990 ‘Madchester’ compilation album Happy Daze.

The James Logo – The Shape

This record has been modelled into the silhouette of a flower with petals and the central part of the flower (Ovule) which James used as the bands logo. The original design was made by Central Station Design a Mancunian design company founded by Pat Carroll, Karen Jackson, and Matt Carroll. It is usually associated with Factory Records and the Madchester scene of the early 1990s. The company created album cover artwork and posters for Factory artists including The Happy Mondays, Black Grape, and James.
