Blondie – The Artist

Blondie is an American rock band founded in 1974 in New York City by singer Debbie Harry and guitarist Chris Stein. The band was a pioneer in the American new wave scene of the mid-1970s in New York City. Its first two albums contained strong elements of punk and new wave, and although highly successful in the UK and Australia, Blondie was regarded as an underground band in the U.S. until the release of Parallel Lines in 1978. Over the next four years, the band released several hit singles including “Dreaming”, “One Way or Another”, “Heart of Glass”, “Call Me”, “Atomic”, “The Tide Is High”, and “Rapture”. The band became noted for its eclectic mix of musical styles, also incorporating elements of disco, pop, reggae, and early rap music. Blondie has sold around 40 million records worldwide and is still active.

Hanging on The Telephone – The Song

“Hanging on The Telephone is a song written by Jack Lee. The song was released in 1976 by his short-lived US West Coast power pop band the Nerves; in 1978, it was recorded and released as a single by American new wave band Blondie. Blondie had discovered the song on a cassette tape compilation given to the band by Jeffrey Lee Pierce. Beginning with a phone sound-effect courtesy of producer Mike Chapman, Blondie’s version of the song was released on the band’s breakthrough third album, Parallel Lines. The single was a top five hit on the UK singles chart and has since seen critical acclaim as one of the band’s best songs.

The Vintage Telephone – The Shape

This 7″ record has been modelled into a vintage telephone, of the style that was used at the time of the records release. It had a base unit with a rotary dial for dialling the numbers and a separate handset, connected by a wire, for listening and talking. A telephone is a telecommunications device that permits two or more users to conduct a conversation when they are too far apart to be heard directly. A telephone converts sound, typically and most efficiently the human voice, into electronic signals that are transmitted via cables and other communication channels to another telephone which reproduces the sound to the receiving user.
