Arnee And The Terminators – The Artist
Arnee And The Terminators was a novelty project by Richard Easter and Mike Woolmans.(a member of Steve Wright’s “posse” on his BBC Radio 1 show of the time) It was a one hit wonder that was released just after the film, Terminator 2: Judgment Day. The original incarnation of Steve Wright in the Afternoon ran from 1981 to 1993 on BBC Radio 1. The show became known in its Radio 1 incarnation for its cast of telephone characters created and performed by Gavin McCoy, Peter Dickson, Richard Easter and Phil Cornwell. Like his mentor, Kenny Everett, Wright went out of his way to be irreverent, including stories taken from the Weekly World News. The success led to a hit single, I’ll Be Back, released under the name Arnee and the Terminaters. In later years the style changed, dumping most of the characters and instead having a “zoo” format, with spoof guests and comedy sketches. A “posse” of producers and radio staff joined in. This format was new to British radio and marked the beginning of the marginalisation (and eventual departure) of several established Radio 1 DJs over the years that followed.
I’ll Be Back (The Dancefloor Devastation Kick-Up) – The Song
“I’ll Be Back (The Dancefloor Devastation Kick-Up)” was written and produced by Richard Easter and Mike Woolmans. The song “I’ll Be Back” parodies both Austrian actor Arnold (“Arnie”) Schwarzenegger’s in-film catchphrase, “I’ll be back” and his role in the Terminator films. Many phrases from the film are featured, such as “I’ll be back”, “Hasta la vista, baby”, “It’s nothing personal” and “I swear I will not hurt anybody”. Lyrically, “I’ll Be Back” consists of singer and protagonist “Arnee” informing the listener that “it’s not that I’m ill-mannered or a psychopathic hater, I just like to be treated right like any Terminator” before driving home the central message that “you don’t need “please” or “thank you”, you just need “I’ll be back””. In the final verse, he advises the listener to follow the same path in difficult situations such as when “your lover gives you the elbow or you’re threatened with the sack”.
