Marvin Gaye & Kim Weston – The Artist/s
Marvin Gaye (born Marvin Pentz Gay Jr.; 1939 – 1984) was an American singer, songwriter, and record producer. He helped to shape the sound of Motown in the 1960s, first as an in-house session player and later as a solo artist with a string of hits, earning him the nicknames “Prince of Motown” and “Prince of Soul”. Gaye’s Motown hits include “Ain’t That Peculiar”, “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)”, and “I Heard It Through the Grapevine”; he also recorded duets with Mary Wells, Kim Weston, Diana Ross, and Tammi Terrell. On April 1, 1984, the day before his 45th birthday, Gaye was fatally shot by his father Marvin Gay Sr. at their house in the West Adams district of Los Angeles.
Kim Weston (born 1939) is an American soul singer, and Motown alumna. In the 1960s, Weston scored hits with the songs “Love Me All the Way” and “Take Me in Your Arms (Rock Me a Little While)”, and with her duet with Marvin Gaye, “It Takes Two”.
It Takes Two – The Song
‘It Takes Two’ is a hit single recorded in late 1965 by Marvin Gaye and Kim Weston for Motown’s Tamla label. Produced by Weston’s then-husband, longtime Gaye collaborator William “Mickey” Stevenson, and co-written by Stevenson and Sylvia Moy, “It Takes Two” cantered on a romantic lyric that depicted many things in life (dreams, love, wishes, etc.) being better with two people instead of one. The single became Gaye’s most successful duet single to date, later outperformed by Gaye’s duets with Tammi Terrell.
