The Funk Masters – The Artist

Funk Masters was a British reggae-funk band. Its single “It’s Over” peaked at number eight on the UK Singles Chart in 1983. The band was formed by DJ Tony Williams (who was a reggae presenter on BBC Radio London) in 1979 and was his very first project. The band’s debut single was an instrumental “Love Money”, released in 1980, as the B-side to “(Money) No Love” credited to Bo Kool, which is seen as one of the first UK rap songs, if not the first. Both songs were written, arranged and produced by Williams. Williams was working in a club on Carnaby Street, London and would “kind of rap” with friend Bo Kool to the Sugarhill Gang’s “Rapper’s Delight”, which had recently been released. He suggested going to a studio and recording it. “Money In My Pocket” by Dennis Brown was popular at the time and Kool decided to write some lyrics based around it. The track was then recorded at Hillside Studio in London. The song also got some traction on the US dance scene.

It’s Over – The Song

‘It’s Overis a 1983 soul / funk track by the British group, The Funk Masters (also credited as The Funk Master) formed by BBBC Radio London DJ Tony Williams. The soul song did well in the UK but was the band’s only chart success. The vocals are uncredited and are by Juliet Roberts (then performing as Julie Roberts) and the song also includes horns by Gonzalez. Lyrically the song is about how the singer can’t believe what she considered was a great relationship is over after her lover left her for her best friend.

The Finger Gesture- The Shape

This record has been modelled into the silhouette of  a  human hand giving the finger. In Western culture, “the finger” or the middle finger (as in giving someone the (middle) finger or the bird or flipping someone off) is an obscene hand gesture. The gesture communicates moderate to extreme contempt, and is roughly equivalent in meaning to “f**k me”, “f**k you”, “shove it up your ass/arse”, “up yours” or “go f**k yourself”. It is performed by showing the back of a hand that has only the middle finger extended upwards, though in some locales, the thumb is extended. Extending the finger is considered a symbol of contempt in several cultures, especially in the Western world. Many cultures use similar gestures to display their disrespect, although others use it to express pointing without intentional disrespect. The gesture is usually used to express contempt but can also be used humorously or playfully. The gesture dates back to ancient Greece and it was also used in ancient Rome. Historically, it represented the phallus. In the early 1800s, it gained increasing recognition as a sign of disrespect and was used by music artists (notably more common among actors, celebrities, athletes and politicians; most still view the gesture as obscene).
