UB40 – The Artist
UB40 are an English reggae and pop band, formed in 1978 in Birmingham, England. The band has had more than 50 singles in the UK Singles Chart, and has also achieved considerable international success with over 70 million records sold worldwide. The ethnic make-up of the band’s original line-up was diverse, with musicians of English, Welsh, Irish, Jamaican, Scottish and Yemeni parentage. The band’s line-up was stable for nearly 29 years, from 1979 until January, when frontman Ali Campbell left the band.
Many Rivers To Cross – The Song
Many Rivers To Cross is a cover version by UB40 of the 1969 Jimmy Cliff song. It was originally recorded in 1969 by Jimmy Cliff and has since been recorded by many musicians, most successfully by UB40, Cher and Annie Lennox. Cliff was aged 25 when he wrote and recorded the song in 1969. He has said he wrote the song due to the trouble he was having making it as a musical artist after moving to the United Kingdom.

James Chambers (1944 – 2025), known professionally as Jimmy Cliff, was a Jamaican ska, rocksteady, reggae and soul musician, multi-instrumentalist, singer and actor. At the time of his death, he was the only living reggae musician to hold the Order of Merit, the highest honour that can be granted by the Jamaican government for achievements in the arts and sciences.
