J.J. Barrie – The Artist
J. J. Barrie (born Barry Authors, 1933)[ is a Canadian songwriter and singer. He is best known for his 1976 UK chart-topper “No Charge”. A former Blue Mink and Ocean manager, and ex-comedian, Barrie turned to songwriting and in early 1976 co-wrote “Where’s The Reason” with Terry Britten for Glen Campbell. They sent a demo to Campbell’s producer, but he suggested Barrie record it. This he did, but it was unsuccessful. Undaunted, Barrie recorded a cover version of the country ballad “No Charge”. Though he released other material this was his only hit.
No Charge – The Song
‘No Charge’ is a country song written by Haarland Howard. The single reached Number 1 in the UK Singles Chart in June 1976, where it remained for one week. The track spent eleven weeks in the chart. It was covered in a spoof by Billy Connoly called “No Chance (No Charge)” in 1976.
The Cash Register- The Shape
This record has been modelled into the shape of a vintage cash register from the period that the song was released. A cash register, sometimes called a till or automated money handling system, is a mechanical or electronic device for registering and calculating transactions at a point of sale. It is usually attached to a drawer for storing cash and other valuables. A modern cash register is usually attached to a printer that can print out receipts for record-keeping purposes
