The Cult – The Artist/s

The Cult are a British rock band formed in 1983. Before settling on their current name in January 1984, the band performed under the name Death Cult, which was an evolution of the name of lead singer Ian Astbury’s previous band Southern Death Cult. They gained a dedicated following in the United Kingdom in the mid-1980s as a post-punk/gothic rock band, with singles such as “She Sells Sanctuary”, before breaking into the mainstream in the United States in the late 1980s establishing themselves as a hard rock band with singles such as “Love Removal Machine” and “Fire Woman”. Since the initial formation of Southern Death Cult in Bradford in 1981, the band have had various line-ups; the longest-serving members are Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy, who are the band’s two songwriters. The Cult relocated to Los Angeles, California, before breaking up in 1995, due to internal conflicts. The band reunited in 1999 and released a few albums before going on hiatus in 2002. They returned in 2006 to perform a series of worldwide tours, and have since released three more studio albums.

She Sells Sanctuary – The Song

‘She Sells Sanctuary’ is a song by the British rock band the Cult. It is from their 1985 album Love and was released as a single in May of that year, peaking at number 15 on the UK Singles Chart. In July 2020, the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) awarded the song a Gold certification for sales and streams of over 400,000. “She Sells Sanctuary” was the last song to be recorded with the Cult’s longtime drummer, Nigel Preston, who was fired from the band shortly after its release. According to Cult guitarist Billy Duffy, the iconic introduction effects were the result of all the guitar effects pedals being on at the same time. The recording was edited to include the introduction with the effects, whereas earlier versions started the song more abruptly.

The Indian Teepee – The Shape

This record has been modelled into the silhouette of a Teepee. A tipi, also tepee or teepee and often called a lodge in older English writings, is a tent, traditionally made of animal skins upon wooden poles. Modern tipis usually have a canvas covering. A teepee is distinguished from other conical tents by the smoke flaps at the top of the structure. Historically, the teepee has been used by Indigenous peoples of the Plains in the Great Plains and Canadian Prairies of North America, notably the seven sub-tribes of the Dakota, among the Iowa people, the Otoe and Pawnee, and among the Blackfeet, Crow, Assiniboines, and Plains Cree. The teepee is durable, provides warmth and comfort in winter, is cool in the heat of summer, and is dry during heavy rains. Teepees can be disassembled and packed away quickly when people need to relocate and can be reconstructed quickly upon settling in a new area. Historically, this portability was important to Plains Indians with their at-times nomadic lifestyle.
