Shirley Ellis – The Artist/s
Shirley Marie O’Garra (stage name Shirley Ellis) 1929 – 2005 was an American soul music singer and songwriter of West Indian heritage. She is best known for her novelty hits “The Nitty Gritty” (1963), “The Name Game” (1964) and “The Clapping Song” (1965). “The Clapping Song” sold over 1 million copies and was awarded a gold disc.
The Clapping Song – The Song
‘The Clapping Song‘ is an American song, written by Lincoln Chase, originally arranged by Charles Callello and recorded by Shirley Ellis in 1965. The song was released shortly after Ellis had released “The Name Game”. “The Clapping Song” incorporates lyrics from the song “Little Rubber Dolly”, a 1930s song recorded by the Light Crust Doughboys, and also features instructions for a clapping game. The single sold over a million copies Cover versions of her hits have been recorded by Madeline Bell, the Belle Stars, Laura Branigan, Aaron Carter, Gary Glitter, Ricardo Ray, Pia Zadora, Southern Culture on the Skids, Gladys Knight and the Pips.

Clap for Our Carers, also known as Clap for Carers, Clap for the NHS or Clap for Key Workers, is a recurring not-for-profit movement created as a gesture of appreciation for the workers of the United Kingdom’s National Health Service (NHS) and other key workers during the global pandemic of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which spread to the United Kingdom in January 2020. The idea originated in Europe before being appropriated by Annemarie Plas in the UK, a Dutch expatriate living in London, who promoted a campaign which took place every Thursday evening at 20:00 between 26 March and 28 May 2020. Many celebrities, influencers, politicians, and public figures supported the campaign.
