Human League – The Artist

The Human League are an English synth-pop band formed in Sheffield in 1977. Initially an experimental electronic outfit, the group signed to Virgin Records in 1979 and later attained widespread commercial success with their third album Dare in 1981. The only constant band member since 1977 has been lead singer and songwriter Philip Oakey. Keyboard players Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh both left the band in 1980 to form Heaven 17. Under Oakey’s leadership, The Human League then evolved into a commercially successful New Pop band with a new line-up including female vocalists Joanne Catherall and Susan Ann Sulley. Since the mid-1990s, the band has essentially been a trio of Oakey, Catherall and Sulley with various sidemen.

The Sound of The Crowd – The Song

The Sound of The Crowd is a song by the English synth-pop band the Human League. It became the band’s commercial breakthrough, reaching #12 on the UK singles chart in May 1981. Written jointly by lead vocalist Philip Oakey and keyboardist Ian Burden, the song was recorded at Genetic Sound Studios in Streatley, Berkshire, in March 1981. Originally released as a stand-alone single in April 1981, it was subsequently remixed and incorporated into the studio album Dare

“The Sound of the Crowd” was the first Human League song to feature female vocals, from new band members Susan Ann Sulley and Joanne Catherall, interacting with Philip Oakey’s lead.

Phil Oakley – The Shape

This record has been modelled into a Phil Oakley. Philip Oakey (born 2 October 1955) is an English singer-songwriter who is the frontman and co-founder of the synth-pop band the Human League. Aside from the Human League, he has enjoyed an extensive solo music career and has collaborated with numerous other artists and producers. Oakey was among the most visually distinctive music artists of the early 1980s. At the height of their success, the Human League released the triple platinum-certified studio album Dare (1981) and Oakey co-wrote and sang the multimillion-selling single “Don’t You Want Me”, a #1 single in both the US and UK, where it remains the 28th-highest-selling single of all time. Oakey has been lead vocalist of the Human League for more than 40 years. With the band, he has sold more than 20 million records worldwide.[4][5] He continues recording and performing internationally.
