The Waterboys – The Artist/s
The Waterboys are a Scottish-Irish folk rock band formed in Edinburgh in 1983 by Scottish musician Mike Scott. The band’s membership, past and present, has been composed mainly of musicians from Scotland, Ireland and England. Mike Scott has remained as the only constant member throughout the band’s career. They have explored a number of different styles, but their music is mainly a mix of folk music with rock and roll. They dissolved in 1993 when Scott departed to pursue a solo career. They reformed in 2000, and continue to release albums and tour worldwide.
The Whole of The Moon – The Song
“The Whole of The Moon” is a folk song written by Michael Coleman and Brian Burke. It was a tribute to the artist L. S. Lowry, who had died two years previously. For the song, Coleman drew on his own memories of Salford and Ancoats as well as the paintings of Lowry. St Winifred’s School Choir appeared on the record, singing the children’s song “The Big Ship Sails on the Alley-Alley-O”, which was sung by children in the Salford area with reference to the Manchester Ship Canal. The single spent three weeks at the top of the UK Singles Chart.
The Waterboys Logo – The Shape
This record had been modelled into the logo used by The Waterboys at the time of the records release but with a moon in the background to emphasise the link between the artist and the song.
