The Johnny Mann Singers – The Artist

John Russell Mann (1928 – 2014) was an American arranger, composer, conductor, entertainer, and recording artist. Johnny Mann and his vocal group The Johnny Mann Singers were involved in several classic rock ‘n’ roll and rockabilly recording sessions for Johnny Burnette, The Crickets and several 1957–1958 sessions with Eddie Cochran, who was also signed to Liberty Records in Hollywood. As bandleader with the Johnny Mann Singers, he and the group recorded approximately three dozen albums. The Johnny Mann Singers’ instrumental “Cinnamint Shuffle (Mexican Shuffle)” hit the US Pop chart in 1966. Their next single, a cover version of “Up, Up and Away”, became the hit version of the song on the UK Singles Chart, over taking the US hit version by The 5th Dimension.

“Up-Up And Away” by the Johnny Mann Singers is a cover version of a 1967 song written by Jimmy Webb and recorded by the 5th Dimension. A canonical example of sunshine pop, themed around images of hot air ballooning. It became an international hit. The instrumental backing was performed by members of the Wrecking Crew, including guitarist Al Casey and drummer Hal Blaine. It has been covered by many artists including; Frank Ifield, Andy Williams, Bing Crosby, Diana Ross & The Supremes and Nancy Sinatra.
