Gary Numan – The Artist

Gary Anthony James Webb (born 1958), better known as Gary Numan, is an English singer, musician, songwriter, composer, and record producer. He first entered the music industry as the frontman of the new wave band Tubeway Army. After releasing two albums with the band, he released his debut solo album The Pleasure Principle in 1979, topping the UK Albums Chart. While his commercial popularity peaked in the late 1970s and early 1980s with the No. 1 singles “Are ‘Friends’ Electric?” and “Cars”, he maintains a strong cult following. Gary Numan is considered a pioneer of electronic music, with his signature sound consisting of heavy synthesiser hooks fed through guitar effects pedals. He is also known for his distinctive voice and androgynous “android” persona.

We Are Glass – The Song

“We Are Glass” is a song by the British singer Gary Numan. It was released as a single in May 1980 and reached number five on the UK Singles Chart. The song was Numan’s first release since his 1979 album, The Pleasure Principle, which had been notable in part for its complete absence of guitars. Though the album was a major commercial success, Numan decided that “getting rid of guitars had been a mistake” and brought them back into the studio for his next project. The recording also featured viola, piano, and a newly expanded array of electronic keyboards, including ARP Pro Soloist and Roland Jupiter-4, to augment the Moog synthesizers of previous releases. The song was inspired after someone made a comment to Gary Numan that everyone , even pop stars are put here for a reason. The record was taken from his studio album Telekon. Though this single was not on the UK albums initial release it appeared along with “I Die, You Die” on subsequent releases.

Gary Numan – The Shape

This record has been modelled into the silhouette of gary Numan sporting a hairstyle he had in the Telekon period along with the distinctive red crossed train lines that featured on the album and single record sleeve, his stage costume as well as promotional material of the time.
