Dalek i – The Artist

Dalek i Love You were a synthpop group from the Wirral, England. At various points in their existence, the band was also known as Dalek I after record executives at Phonogram shortened the band’s name. The band was formed in 1977 by David Balfe and Alan Gill and influenced by Kraftwerk. The band name was a compromise: Balfe wanted to call the band the Daleks (after the Doctor Who villains), while Gill wanted to call the band Darling, I Love You. In 1978, Balfe left the group to manage other bands, and eventually joined Big in Japan and later the Teardrop Explodes. In August 1978, the band were joined by Martin Cooper (saxophone), Andy McCluskey (lead vocals and bass, who was previously in the Id) and Kenny Peers (drums), along with poets Gordon Hon (aka “The Worm”) and Max the Actor. In September, McCluskey quit to rejoin a former Id bandmate, Paul Humphreys, to form Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, and by October 1978, only Gill and Hughes remained in the band. As a duo, they signed to Inevitable Records. A demo of “Freedom Fighters” attracted the interest of Phonogram Records, who then signed them. The band inspired the title of Dalek I Love You, a radio drama which premiered on the British digital radio station BBC 7 on 11 February 2006. The story centred on a man obsessed with Doctor Who who falls in love at a science fiction convention.

Dalek I Love You (Destiny) – The Song

‘Dalek I Love You (Destiny)’ is a song by English electronic music band Dalek i. It is a UK single, released in 1980 and is taken from their debut album Compass Kumpas. The album has a cult following, and this single remains popular among Doctor Who fans for its oblique lyrics about the show’s menacing villains, the Daleks.

The Dalek – The Shape

This record is modelled into the silhouette of a Dalek the fictional villain from the TV series Doctor Who. The background colour options are inspired by the various colours schemes the Daleks have appeared in the Doctor Who TV series and 60s films over the years.
