Japan – The Artists
Japan were an English new wave band formed in 1974 in Catford, South London by David Sylvian (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Steve Jansen (drums), Richard Barbieri (keyboards) and Mick Karn (bass guitar). Initially a glam rock-inspired band, Japan developed their sound and androgynous look to incorporate electronic music and foreign influences, eventually becoming an influence on the UK’s early-1980s New Romantic scene.
Gentlemen Take Polaroids – The Song
“Gentlemen Take Polaroids” is a song by English new wave band, Japan. Written by David Sylvian and produced by John Punter. It was the single taken from the band’s first album, of the same name, for the Virgin Records label, after leaving Hansa-Ariola who had released their first three albums. This song and material on the album continued in the vein of their previous album “Quiet Life”, drawing on its elegant Euro-disco stylings coupled with more ambitious arrangements. This was the last Japan album to feature guitarist Rob Dean, who left the band in spring 1981.
Instant Camera – The Shape
This record has been modelled into the silhouette of an instant camera. The instant camera is a type of camera which uses self-developing film to create a chemically developed print shortly after taking the picture. Polaroid Corporation pioneered (and patented) consumer-friendly instant cameras and film, and were followed by various other manufacturers.
