I Dreamed A Dream – The Song

‘I Dreamed A Dreamis a song from the musical Les Misérables. It is a solo that is sung by the character Fantine during the first act. The music is by Claude-Michel Schönberg, with orchestrations by John Cameron. The English lyrics are by Herbert Kretzmer, based on the original French libretto by Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel from the original Frencproduction. The song is a lament, sung by the anguished Fantine, who has just been fired from her job at the factory and thrown onto the streets. She thinks back to happier days and wonders at all that has gone wrong in her life. The 1985 single is sung by Pahtti LuPone an American actress and singer, best known for her work in stage musicals.

Flag Waving Revolutionary – The Shape

This record has been modelled into the young Cosette who is the eight-year-old daughter of Fantine. Her image has become the popular face of the Les Misérables musical and is found on much of the promotional material.

Les Misérables, colloquially known in English-speaking countries as Les Mis, is a sung-through musical adapted from French poet and novelist Victor Hugo’s 1862 novel of the same name by Claude-Michel Schönberg (music), Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel (original French lyrics), and Herbert Kretzmer (English lyrics). Set in early 19th-century France, Les Misérables is the story of Jean Valjean, a French peasant, and his desire for redemption after serving nineteen years in jail for having stolen a loaf of bread for his sister’s starving child. Valjean decides to break his parole and start his life anew after a bishop inspires him by a tremendous act of mercy, but he is relentlessly tracked down by a police inspector named Javert. Along the way, Valjean and a slew of characters are swept into a revolutionary period in France, where a group of young idealists attempt to overthrow the government at a street barricade.

Beautifully thought out and presented. I purchased this for a friend who’s favourite musical is Les Miserables, she was so delighted with the result.
