Gary Shearston – The Artist
Gary Rhett Shearston (1939 – 2013) was an Australian singer and songwriter and Anglican priest. He was a leading figure of the folk music revival of the 1960s and was notable as a performer of Australian traditional folk songs in an authentic style. He scored a Top 10 hit in the United Kingdom in 1974 with his cover version of the Cole Porter song “I Get a Kick out of You”.
I Get a Kick Out of You – The Song
‘I Get a Kick Out of You’ is a cover version of the original song by Cole Porter. This deadpan interpretation by Australian folk singer Gary Shearston was a top ten hit in the UK. I was taken from his 1979 album Dingo. “I Get a Kick Out of You” is a song by Cole Porter, which was first sung in the 1934 Broadway musical Anything Goes, and then in the 1936 film version. Originally sung by Ethel Merman, it has been covered by dozens of prominent performers, including Frank Sinatra, Dolly Parton, and Ella Fitzgerald.
