Rainbow – The Artist

Rainbow (also known as Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow or Blackmore’s Rainbow) are a British rock supergroup led by guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, active from 1975 until 1984, 1993 until 1997, and 2015 until present. They were originally established with Ronnie James Dio’s American rock band Elf, but after their first album, Blackmore fired the backing members and continued with Dio until 1979. Three British musicians joined in 1979—singer Graham Bonnet, keyboardist Don Airey and then-former Deep Purple bassist Roger Glover—and this line-up gave the band their commercial breakthrough with the single “Since You Been Gone”. Over the years Rainbow went through many personnel changes, with each studio album recorded with a different lineup, and leaving Blackmore as the band’s only constant member. The singers Joe Lynn Turner and Doogie White followed Bonnet, and numerous backing musicians have come and gone. In addition to Blackmore, Rainbow’s current lineup includes Ronnie Romero on vocals, Jens Johansson on keyboards, Bob Nouveau on bass and David Keith on drums. Rainbow are a pioneer of power metal, the band’s early work primarily featured mystical lyrics with a neoclassical metal style, but went in a more streamlined, commercial direction following Dio’s departure from the group.

I Surrender – The Song

“I Surrender” is a song written by former Argent guitarist and singer Russ Ballard and performed by Rainbow, the song became the band’s biggest hit in the UK. Originally, some backing vocals were recorded by Graham Bonnet, but after he quit the band, lead and backing vocals were sung by his replacement Joe Lynn Turner. Heavy metal band Praying Mantis band were originally in the running the release the song and had already recorded the backing track and were adding the vocals when they were told to stop as Rainbow, being the bigger name, had been given the nod to record and release the song. ‘I Surrender’ was a single taken from the bands fifth studio album, ‘Difficult to Cure.’

Fist & Rainbow – The Shape

This record is modelled into a clenched fist and rainbow similar to the design as used on their promotional material. A fist is the shape of a hand when the fingers are bent inward against the palm and held there tightly. To make or clench a fist is to fold the fingers tightly into the centre of the palm and then to clamp the thumb over the middle phalanges; in contrast to this “closed” fist, one keeps the fist “open” by holding the thumb against the side of the index finger. One uses the closed fist to punch the lower phalanges against a surface, or to pound with the little-finger side of the hand’s heel; one uses the open fist to knock with the middle knuckle of the middle finger.
