The Artist

Elvis Presley was an American singer and actor. Regarded as one of the most significant cultural icons of the 20th century, he is often referred to as the “King of Rock and Roll” or simply “the King”. With a series of successful network television appearances and chart-topping records, he became the leading figure of the newly popular sound of rock and roll. His energised interpretations of songs and sexually provocative performance style, combined with a singularly potent mix of influences across colour lines during a transformative era in race relations, made him enormously popular—and controversial. Presley is one of the most celebrated and influential musicians of the 20th century. Commercially successful in many genres, including pop, country, blues, and gospel, he is the best-selling solo artist in the history of recorded music.

The Song

‘I Just Can’t Help Believin’ is a song written by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil. The song was most successful after it was recorded by B.J. Thomas and released as a single in 1970. It was recorded by Elvis Presley in 1970 as a track on his album That’s the Way It Is. It was released as a single in the UK in November 1971. The song tells the tale of a mans love of a woman and how he believes that his true love will eventually choose to stay with him. Hence the lyrics “I just can’t help believin’, This time the girl is gonna stay.’ Though the song is also popular with people who have  faith.

Elvis Presley – The Shape

Modelled into the singing, crouched Elvis Presley wearing an example of his famous Las Vegas stage-wear. He originally wore these decorated, style-defining jumpsuits for functionality so he could comfortably sing and dance while performing live at his shows. Apparently Elvis Presley was a black belt in karate, and wanted to incorporate karate moves into his performance and the jumpsuit made this possible. His most famous jumpsuit was the ‘Concho Jumpsuit’, which was an early example of Elvis’ legendary Las Vegas stage-wear.
