Nat King Cole – The Artist

Nathaniel Adams Coles (1919 – 1965), known professionally as Nat King Cole, was an American singer and jazz pianist. He recorded over 100 songs that became hits on the pop charts. His trio was the model for small jazz ensembles that followed. Cole also acted in films and on television and performed on Broadway. He was the first African-American man to host an American television series. He was the father of singer-songwriter Natalie Cole (1950–2015). Cole recorded some of his best hit singles during the 1960s, including “Let There Be Love” with George Shearing in 1961, the country-flavored hit “Ramblin’ Rose” in August 1962, “Dear Lonely Hearts”, “That Sunday, That Summer” and “Those Lazy-Hazy-Crazy Days of Summer”. He performed in many short films, sitcoms, and television shows and played W. C. Handy in the film St. Louis Blues (1958). He also appeared in The Nat King Cole Story, China Gate, and The Blue Gardenia (1953).

Let There Be Love – The Song

‘Let There Be Love’ is a popular song with music by Lionel Rand and lyrics by Ian Grant, published in 1940. The song is a well-known standard with cover versions by many artists, notably Nat King Cole.
Lyrically, the song talks about the joy of the existence of, in order: the singer and his beloved, oysters under the sea, occasional weather changes (“let there be wind / occasional rain”), chili con carne, champagne, birds that sing, friends (“someone to bless me whenever I sneeze”), birds of various kinds (“cuckoos, a lark and a dove”), but that all of these would mean nothing if love were not put first (“but first of all – please / Let there be love”).
