Ike & Tina Turner – The Artist
Ike (1931 – 2007) & Tina Turner (1939 – 2023) were an American musical duo consisting of husband and wife Ike Turner and Tina Turner. From 1960 to 1976, they performed live as the Ike & Tina Turner Revue, supported by Ike Turner’s band, the Kings of Rhythm, and backing vocalists, the Ikettes. The Ike & Tina Turner Revue was regarded as “one of the most potent live acts on the R&B circuit.”
The duo had a string of R&B hits with their early recordings “A Fool In Love”, “It’s Gonna Work Out Fine”, “I Idolize You”, “Poor Fool”, and “Tra La La La La”. The release of “River Deep – Mountain High” in 1966, followed by a tour of the UK with The Rolling Stones, increased their popularity in Europe. Their later works are noted for interpretive soul-infused re-arrangements of rock songs such as “Come Together”, “Honky Tonk Woman”, and “Proud Mary”. They released dozens of albums; their most successful by chart performance being Workin’ Together. Pitchfork listed their album River Deep – Mountain High among the best of its era. In spite of their success, they had a tumultuous marriage and the duo split in 1976. Following their divorce, Tina went on to enjoy a highly successful solo career.
Proud Mary – The Song
“Proud Mary” is a song by American rock band Creedence Clearwater Revival, written by vocalist and lead guitarist John Fogerty. It was released as a single in January 1969 by Fantasy Records and on the band’s second studio album, Bayou Country. This is a cover version by R&B duo Ike & Tina Turner for their album Workin’ Together, released on Liberty Records in 1971 and was just as popular as the original. After the disbandment of the duo, Tina Turner continued to perform the song during her solo career, and recorded new versions of it for her studio as well as live albums.
Tina Turner – The Shape
This record has been modelled into a silhouette of Tina Turner dancing with her distinctive hairstyle which she was well know for. Tina Turner’s hairstyles included a mega mullet, curly bobs, spiky hair, and straight tresses. Her hair was often described as bold, edgy, and a symbol of rebirth. Tina Turner’s mega mullet was a frizzed-out style that was a symbol of rebirth. Her blonde and barbed wigs were an exaggeration of the era’s over-the-top hair
