Aswad – The Artist

Aswad are a long-lasting British reggae group, noted for adding strong R&B and soul influences to the reggae sound. They have been performing since the mid-1970s, having released a total of 21 albums. “Aswad” is Arabic for “black”. The members of Aswad are UK descendants of immigrants from the Caribbean. The original members of Aswad were guitarist/vocalist Brinsley “Chaka B” Forde, drummer/vocalist Angus “Drummie Zeb” Gaye, lead guitarist/vocalist Donald “Dee” Griffiths, bassist George “Ras” Oban, and keyboardist Courtney “Khaki” Hemmings. Initially, the band produced music in the roots reggae vein, with members contributing songs individually and with Forde acting as the band’s principal songwriter. The band’s dynamic soon began to change however and once the band’s line-up had stabilised into the trio of Forde, Gaye, and Robinson, Aswad followed a more commercial reggae style, gaining a wider audience.

Shine – The Song

‘Shine’ is a song by British reggae group Aswad. The song was written by Joe Cang and Aswad, who also produced it. Released in early 1994 in a radically remixed form courtesy of the Beatmasters, it was the first single from the group’s album Rise and Shine. It is the band’s second-biggest hit in the United Kingdom, after 1988’s “Don’t Turn Around”, reaching number five on the UK Singles Chart. “Shine” also became a top-forty hit in several European countries and New Zealand.

The Star – The Shape

This record has been modelled into a  five-pointed star inspired by the songs lyrics, “Come on and shine (shine), shine like a star. Shining so bright like the star that you are.”.  A five-pointed star, geometrically a regular concave decagon, is a common ideogram in modern culture. Comparatively rare in classical heraldry, it was notably introduced for the flag of the United States in the Flag Act of 1777 and since has become widely used in flags. It has also become a symbol of fame or “stardom” in Western culture, among other uses.
