Additional information about this, The Beat vinyl art.

The Beat – The Artist

The Beat (known in the United States and Canada as the English Beat and in Australia as the British Beat) are a band founded in Birmingham, England, in 1978. Its music fuses Latin, ska, pop, soul, reggae and punk rock. The Beat, consisting of Dave Wakeling (vocals, guitar), Ranking Roger (vocals), Andy Cox (guitar), David Steele (bass), Everett Morton (drums), and Saxa a.k.a. Lionel Augustus Martin (saxophone), released three studio albums in the early 1980s and a string of singles, including “Tears of a Clown”, “Mirror in the Bathroom”, “Save It for Later”, “Too Nice to Talk To”, “Can’t Get Used to Losing You”, “Hands Off, She’s Mine”, and “All Out to Get You”.

Tears Of A Clown – The Song

“The Tears of a Clown” is a ska-flavored cover version of the Motown hit by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles. Originally written by Hank Cosby, Smokey Robinson, and Stevie Wonder and originally recorded by Smokey Robinson & the Miracles for the Tamla Records label subsidiary of Motown, first appearing on the 1967 album ‘Make It Happen’. Stevie Wonder wrote the music for the song and on hearing it, Smokey Robinson thought the melody sounded like a circus and consequently wrote the lyrics that reflected his vision. In the song, the character is sad because a woman has left him, and he compares himself to the characters in the opera Pagliacci, in which clowns hides their hurt and anger behind empty smiles.

The Clown – The Shape

Modelled into a silhouette of Pierot the white faced, crying clown from the Italian opera Pagliacci. Pagliacci (literal translation, “Clowns”) is an Italian opera in a prologue and two acts, with music and libretto by Ruggero Leoncavallo.
