Rev. W. Awdry / Johnny Morris – The Artists

Wilbert Vere Awdry, OBE (1911 – 1997) was an English Anglican cleric, railway enthusiast, and children’s author. Better known as the Reverend W. Awdry, he was the creator of Thomas the Tank Engine, the central figure in his Railway Series.

John Ernest Morris, OBE (1916 – 1999) was a British television presenter. He was known for his children’s programmes for the BBC on the topic of zoology, most notably Animal Magic and for narrating the imported, Canadian-produced Tales of the Riverbank series of stories about Hammy the Hamster, Roderick the Rat, GP the Guinea Pig, and their assorted animal friends along a riverbank.

The Railway Stories – The Story

‘The Railway Stories is a collection of short stories about the fictional Steam locomotive, Thomas the tank engine and his friends. Written by Reverend Wilbert Awdry. The series has been read by a variety of presenters and celebrities but this particular 60’s release was read by the British television presenter Johhny Morris.

Thomas The Tank Engine – The Shape

This record has been modelled into Thomas the Tank Engine which is the anthropomorphised fictional steam locomotive in The Railway Series books by the Reverend Wilbert Awdry, published from 1945. He became the most popular and famous character in the series, and is the titular protagonist in the accompanying television spin-off series Thomas & Friends. Thomas is a steam engine and has a number 1 painted on his side. All of the locomotives in The Railway Series were based on prototypical engines; Thomas has origins in the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway E2 class designed by Lawson Billinton in 1913. Thomas first appeared in 1946 in the 2nd book in the series, Thomas the Tank Engine, and was the focus of the 4 short stories contained within. Thomas’s best friends are Percy and Toby. In 1979, British writer/producer Britt Allcroft came across the books, and arranged a deal to bring the stories to life as the TV series Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends (later simplified to Thomas & Friends). The programme became an award-winning hit around the world, with a vast range of spinoff commercial products.
