Talk Talk – The Artist/s
Talk Talk were an English band formed in 1981, led by Mark Hollis (vocals, guitar, piano), Lee Harris (drums), and Paul Webb (bass). The group achieved early chart success with the synth-pop singles “Talk Talk” (1982), “It’s My Life”, and “Such a Shame” (both 1984) before moving towards a more experimental approach in the mid-1980s, pioneering what became known as post-rock. Talk Talk achieved widespread critical success in Europe and the UK with the singles “Life’s What You Make It” (1985), and “Living in Another World” (1986), and in 1988 they released their fourth album Spirit of Eden, which was critically acclaimed yet commercially less successful. Friction with the band’s label, EMI, resulted in legal action and countersuing. Webb departed, and the band switched to Polydor for their final studio album, 1991’s Laughing Stock, but split soon afterwards.
Today – The Song
‘Today’ is a song by British band Talk Talk released in June 1982 and is the third single from their debut album The Party’s Over. It was the band’s first top 20 hit and was their second ever biggest hit, peaking at number 14 on the UK Singles Chart.
The Tearful Lips – The Shape
This record has been modelled into a pair of lips and a single teardrop. Inspired by the records picture sleeve and the lyrics, “Happiness can often bleed”. Lips are a visible body part at the mouth of many animals, including humans. Lips are soft, movable, and serve as the opening for food intake and in the articulation of sound and speech. Human lips are a tactile sensory organ, and can be an erogenous zone when used in kissing and other acts of intimacy. Tears are a clear liquid secreted by the tear gland found in the eyes of nearly all land mammals. Their functions include lubricating the eyes, removing irritants, and aiding the immune system. Tears also occur as a part of the body’s natural pain response. Humans are the only mammals known to produce tears as part of an emotional response, such as out of joy or grief.
