Block Party – The Artist/s

Bloc Party are an English rock band, composed of Kele Okereke (lead vocals, rhythm guitar, keyboards, sampler), Russell Lissack (lead guitar, keyboards), Justin Harris (bass guitar, keyboards, saxophones, backing vocals) and Louise Bartle (drums, percussion). Former members Matt Tong and Gordon Moakes left the band in 2013 and 2015 respectively. Their brand of music, whilst rooted in rock, retains elements of other genres such as electronica and house music. The band was formed at the 1999 Reading Festival by Okereke and Lissack. They went through a variety of names before settling on Bloc Party in 2003. In February 2005, the band released their debut album Silent Alarm. It was critically acclaimed and was named Indie Album of the Year at the 2006 PLUG Awards and NME Album of the year which both honour indie music. That year, the record was also certified platinum in Britain. The band built on this success in 2007 with the release of their second studio album, A Weekend in the City, which reached a peak of number two in the UK Albums Chart and number twelve in the Billboard 200.

Banquet – The Song

‘Banquet’ is a song from British band Bloc Party’s debut album Silent Alarm. Originally released on a double A-side single along with “Staying Fat” in May 2004 by Moshi Moshi Records, it was re-released as a regular single in the United Kingdom by Wichita Recordings on 25 April 2005. It was their first single to chart on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks where it came in at number 34, and is often credited as their breakthrough single in North America. The song was originally written by Okereke on tour in 2003. Okereke was inspired by Pixies’ record Doolittle at the time, specifically the song called “I Bleed”, which was later used for the phrasing of “Banquet”. Apart from Pixies, Okereke was also inspired by the song “Prince Charming” by Adam and the Ants. The song is about teenage life and contains lines and phrases related to sex. The song also contains contradiction such as “turning away from the light” and “turning into the light”. These and other phrases, such as, I’m on fire, reflect the author’s feelings of the process of “becoming adult”.

The Five-Pointed Star – The Shape

This vinyl single has been reworked into the silhouette of a five-pointed star.  A star is type of astronomical object consisting of a luminous spheroid of plasma held together by its own gravity. The nearest star to Earth is the Sun. Many other stars are visible to the naked eye from Earth during the night, appearing as a multitude of fixed luminous points in the sky due to their immense distance from Earth.
