Adam Ant – The Artist

Stuart Leslie Goddard, better known as Adam Ant (born November 1954), is an English singer, musician, and actor. He gained popularity as the lead singer of new wave group Adam and the Ants and later as a solo artist, scoring 10 UK top ten hits from 1980 to 1983, including three UK No. 1 singles. From 1977 to 1982 he performed with Adam and the Ants, and their debut album Dirk Wears White Sox (1979) reached number one on the UK Independent Albums Chart. Prior to recording his second album as Adam and the Ants, he asked producer Malcolm McLaren to manage his band, who instead took his backing band to form Bow Wow Wow. Ant regrouped with new members, including Marco Pirroni, to release his second album Kings of the Wild Frontier (1980). It reached number one in the UK Album Chart, spawned three hit singles, became the UK number-one selling album in 1981. He released his third and final album with the group, Prince Charming (1981), which spawned two UK number-one singles “Stand and Deliver” and “Prince Charming”. In 1982, he disbanded his group for a solo career retaining only Marco Pirroni as a band member and co-songwriter for later solo albums. His first solo album was Friend or Foe (1982), from which the debut single “Goody Two Shoes” 

Stand And Deliver – The Song

“Stand And Deliver”  is a song by British new wave band Adam and the Ants, released as the lead single from their third studio album, Prince Charming (1981). It was the band’s first No. 1 hit in the UK. The phrase “stand and deliver — your money or your life”, used in the lyrics, is commonly associated with highwaymen in 18th century England. Listed as the third best-selling single of 1981, it has sold over 1 million copies in the UK. The costume and general plot of the video show a strong influence from the 1973 Monty Python sketch “Dennis Moore”, although the highwayman scenario had also recently formed the basis for the Dick Turpin series on UK television, starring Richard O’Sullivan in the title role. It features Adam Ant dressed as a “dandy highwayman” who threatens his victims with the mirror image of their unfashionable selves and who is captured and escapes being hanged from the gallows with help from his accomplices (his band members).

The 18th century Highwayman – The Shape

This record has been modelled into a typical 18th century Highwayman who often wore a mask and ‘highwayman’s’ hat. A highwayman was a robber who stole from travellers. This type of thief usually travelled and robbed by horse as compared to a footpad who travelled and robbed on foot; mounted highwaymen were widely considered to be socially superior to footpads. Such criminals operated until the mid- or late 19th century.
