Rick Astley – The Artists
Richard Paul Astley (born 1966) is an English singer, songwriter and radio personality. His 1987 song “Never Gonna Give You Up” was a number 1 hit single in 25 countries and won the 1988 Brit Award for Best British Single. By the time of his retirement in 1993, Astley had sold approximately 40 million records worldwide.
Whenever you Need Somebody – The Song
Whenever You Need Somebody was originally written for British singer O’Chi Brown, and released in November 1985 on Magnet Records. It only became a minor hit for Brown in the UK Singles Chart, partly due to lacklustre of available record stock. This is a cover version by Rick Astley which was rushed out by Stock, Aitken and Waterman to gather strong follow up material in the wake of the unexpected global mega-success of “Never Gonna Give You Up”. The song would become the title track and second single from Astley’s multi-million selling debut album Whenever You Need Somebody, also written and produced by Stock Aitken Waterman. It was a successful European hit for Astley, reaching No. 1 in seven countries, continuing the success of his previous smash single.
