Kiri Te Kanawa – The Artist

Dame Kiri Jeanette Claire Te Kanawa (born Claire Mary Teresa Rawstron, 1944) is a New Zealand former opera singer. Her career included a full lyric soprano voice, which has been described as “mellow yet vibrant, warm, ample and unforced”. Kiri Te Kanawa has received accolades in many countries, singing a wide array of works in many languages dating from the 17th to the 20th centuries. She is particularly associated with the works of Mozart, Strauss, Verdi, Handel and Puccini, and has found considerable success in portraying princesses, nobility, and other similar characters on stage. She received considerable global recognition for her version of ‘World in Union’ which was used in the UK for the ITV rugby world cup broadcasts.

World In Union – The Song

World In Union, with lyrics by Charlie Skarbek, is a theme song for the Rugby World Cup that attempts to capture the spirit of international friendship which exemplifies rugby union culture the world over. The melody is “Thaxted”—the stately theme from the middle section of “Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity”, a movement from Gustav Holst’s “The Planets”, and was originally adapted for its use in the British/Anglican patriotic hymn, “I Vow to Thee, My Country”. This piece is cut from the version by New Zealand operatic soprano Kiri Te Kanawa. She recorded the first version of this song for the 1991 Rugby World Cup, which went to No.4 in the UK Singles Chart.

The Rugby Ball – The Shape

This record has been modelled into a leather rugby ball. A rugby ball is an elongated ellipsoidal ball used in rugby football. Its measurements and weight are specified by World Rugby and the Rugby League International Federation, the governing bodies for both codes, rugby union and rugby league respectively. The rugby ball has an oval shape, four panels and a weight of about 400 gr. It is often confused with some balls of similar dimensions used in American, Canadian and Australian football..
